The sealing element (2) has a base profile (4) fitting over the edge of the switch panel housing, or a projecting edge of the panel plate or door and joined to a smooth seam profile (6), respectively acting against the panel plate or door, or against the switch panel housing. The opposing free edges (14, 22) of the base profile engage in a retaining slot around the periphery of the housing or the panel plate or door edge and fit behind an endless retaining rib respectively.
