PURPOSE:To provide the large-area liquid crystal display device. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal 9 of this liquid crystal display device consists of a bistable nematic phase. Oriented films 11 consist of high polymer films having at least one of 6-membered rings in the side chains and are oriented in a uniaxial direction. A driving device selectively switches a state 1 that a substrate and the major axis of liquid crystal molecules have a specified tilt angle on the upper substrate 7 and that the substrate and the major axis of the liquid crystal molecules are parallel on a lower substrate 8 and the major axis of the liquid crystal molecules near the upper and lower substrates projected to the substrate surfaces are nearly in the same direction as each other and a state that the sectional direction of the substrate and the major axis of the liquid crystal molecules have a specified tilt angle on the lower substrate 8 and that the sectional direction of the substrate and the major axis of the liquid crystal molecules are parallel and the major axes of the liquid crystal molecules near the upper and lower substrates are nearly in the same direction as each other on the upper substrate 7 by applying voltages to the liquid crystal display device.
