A novel pyrrolidine derivative represented by general formula (1) or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, having the activity of inhibiting prolyl endopeptidases, in particular, serine protease and thiol protease, and being prospective as the active ingredient of a remedy for amnesia. In said formula, X represents (1) optionally substituted benzoyl, (2) optionally substituted cycloalkylcarbonyl, (3) lower alkylcarbonyl, (4) optionally substituted phenylmethyloxycarbonyl, or (5) optionally substituted lower phenylalkylcarbonyl; and Y represents (1) lower alkyl, (2) cycloalkyl, (3) optionally substituted phenyl, or (4) optionally substituted lower phenylalkyl.
