The power economiser responds to activity on the display or printer to determine whether their power supply can be reduced. A detector circuit connected between the processor unit (1) and the peripherals monitors activity, and after a time delay set by the user automatically reduces the power supply to the inactive peripheral. The same detector circuit then waits for a signal to be directed from the central processor to the peripheral, and automatically restores the power to the peripheral to enable it to perform the required function. A circuit is provided to respond in the same manner as the peripheral while the power is being restored.
