A hand held personal protection device for firing a projectile 4 for delivering a non-lethal blow to an assailant comprises a housing 6 for a charge of a propellant material and a projectile 4 which includes a blind passage so that the projectile can fit over the housing. When the device is fired the projectile is propelled by the force exerted by the propellant material on a surface of the projectile which defines at least part of the passage. A firing mechanism comprising a spring operated firing pin 102 is connected to a rotatable and slidable handle 10 used for the dual purpose of cocking the firing mechanism or placing the firing mechanism in a safe condition in which the device cannot be fired. A push button trigger 8 releases the cocked firing pin upon depression thereof.
