<p>PURPOSE: To make a multiplex level high by adapting surface orientation to a cholesteric material in such a manner that the cumulative molecular twist of a specific size is given in a uniform inclination direction. CONSTITUTION: This liquid crystal device includes a layer 2 of the cholesteric material which is included between cell wall parts 3 and 4, has <=20μm thickness and has positive dielectric anisotropy and electrode structures 6, 7 disposed at the wall parts 3, 4 so as to form plural addressable elements. The wall parts 3, 4 in contact with a liquid crystal material are subjected to a surface treatment in such a manner that the liquid crystal molecules are oriented to a homogeneous state with inclination. The surface orientation is adapted to the cholesteric material in such a manner that the cumulative molecular twist larger thanπradian and smaller than 2πradian is given in the uniform inclination direction. Further, the device has a circuit for selectively absorbing the light transmitted according to the molecular arrangement and impressing voltages at r.m.s. multiplex and has a steep transmission-voltage characteristic so that the respective addressable elements are directly changed over between a light transparent state and a non-transparent state.</p> |
