<p>A concrete composition comprises a cementitious component of relatively fine particles and a coarse aggregate which consists of particles at least 70% by weight of which are shaped such that the ratio (Vp:Vs), between the volume (Vp) of a given particle and the volume (Vs) of the notional sphere of minimum volume capable of containing that particle wholly within it, is in the range 1:2 to 1:6. The composition has fewer than 10% by volume of particles having a size in the range 2 mm to 5 mm as determined by retention on British Standard sieves. The compositions can be laid to form a very dense concrete with high mechanical stability which is suitable for use in the construction of load-bearing surfaces e.g. roads, and runways.</p> |
