PURPOSE:To reduce electric power loss as much as possible by supplying a fine current for maintaining a fine discharge state at all times while securing starting ability by high-voltage application. CONSTITUTION:In the DC lighting type discharge lamp lighting device which applies a starting voltage of hundreds of volts at the start of a DC lighting type discharge lamp 1 by a power circuit 2 for auxiliary discharge and continuously supplies the fine current for maintaining fine discharge at all times, and supplies a main discharging current selectively by a power circuit 3 for main discharge to turn on the DC lighting type discharge lamp 2 by discharging, the power circuit 2 for auxiliary discharge is provided with a high-voltage power source EA1 which applies the high-voltage for starting, a low-voltage power source AA2 which supplies the fine current for maintaining fine discharge at all times, and a switch part SWA which switches the high-voltage power source EA1 to the low-voltage power source EA2 when the voltage drops to a discharge lamp voltage for fine discharge after the start.
