Method for operating a process using a family of characteristic curves

A method is presented for operating a technical process, especially a process in a motor vehicle, using a control device (10). In the control device (10), characteristic values for the control of the process are determined from a family of characteristic curves. The family of characteristic curves is drawn up from operational variables of the process. The family of characteristic curves is represented by a number of reference points (20) stored in the memory (12) of the control device (10). For each reference point (20), at least one item of address information about the position of the reference point (20) in the family of characteristic curves and one item of useful information about the value of the family of characteristic curves at the position of the reference point (20) are stored in the memory (12) of the control device (10). The reference points (20) can thus be placed at any location of the family of characteristic curves, independently of a fixed grid of operational variables. For selecting a suitable reference point for a working point of the process, a distance calculation is carried out (Figure 2). <IMAGE>
