To facilitate cleaning of the upper ram (6) of a vertical press (1), a revolving brush (14) is mounted on the hopper (12) of the press. Programmable position controllers (17, 22) for the vertical movement of the upper ram (16) and of a moulding plate (5) and for the horizontal movement of the hopper (12) ensure that, for cleaning or wetting, the revolving brush (14) always passes over the surface of the upper ram (6) at an optimum distance. This operation is also ensured if the upper ram (6) and the moulding plate (5) have to execute complicated movements at the same time because the ram surface (6) is tilted or because a mould (5%) of the moulding plate (5) has to be filled at an angle.
