MINIATURE HARD DISK DRIVE SYSTEM

The present invention relates to a miniature hard disk drive system comprising: a substantially sealed enclosure (1, 3) housing a head-disk assembly (8, 9; 42..) and attached printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) means (7) mounted on one planar side. The head disk assembly (8, 9; 42..) includes hard disk(s) (9) provided with rotary drive means (8), an actuator assembly (42) pivotally supporting and positioning read/write head flexure assemblies (11). In one aspect of the invention the drive system has at least two miniature hard disks (9) each having an outer diameter of from 40 to 50 mm, and the drive system is accommodated within a total thickness not exceeding 10.5 mm. In another aspect the PCBA (7) has first contact pads (52) and the head-disk assembly (8, 9; 42..) has flexible circuit means (16) with a first flexing portion (16a) connected to the actuator assembly (42) for electrical connection to read-write heads (11), and a second portion with second contact pads (52). A miniature elastomeric connector (32) is mounted in an aperture (45) in a planar side wall (1) of the enclosure (1, 3) for interconnecting the first and second contact pads (52) for data transmission between the read-write heads (11) and the PCBA (7).
