PURPOSE:To make a superior black-and-white display by performing color compensation in the visible wavelength range of the liquid crystal display device. CONSTITUTION:One-surface sides 6a and 7a of a 1st substrate 6 and a 2nd substrate 7, orienting films 8 and 9 are formed covering transparent electrodes which are not shown in the figure and a liquid crystal layer 10 is interposed between both the substrates to form a liquid crystal element 2. The twist angle thetaof liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal layer 10 is 240 deg.. On the other surface 6b of the 1st substrate 6, a phase difference plate 3 which has wavelength dispersion nearly equal to the wavelength dispersion of birefringence of liquid crystal molecules 10a of the liquid crystal layer 10 is formed, and a 1st polarizing plate 4 is arranged further thereupon. On the other surface 7b of the 2nd substrate 7, a 2nd polarizing plate 5 is arranged to constitute the liquid crystal display device 1. |
