[Also in Divisions B1 and F4] A helical conveyer heat-exchanger comprises two pairs of hollow, helical conveyer elements arranged within a jacketed casing, the apparatus being intended for heating, cooling or drying of granular, pasty, or liquid substances or for mixing these substances of similar consistency or with liquids or particulate solids. The elements 1, 2 of one pair rotate in one direction and the elements 3, 4 of the other pair rotate in the opposite direction. The respective elements 1, 2 or 3, 4 of each pair intermesh with one another for the whole depth of helix (as shown). Adjacent elements 2, 3 of the respective pairs only partly intermesh. The axes of the elements may all be in the same plane (as shown) or in two planes each containing a pair of elements, Figs. 4, 5, not shown. Fig. 3 shows the flow path of the substances being conveyed through the casing by the elements, the interior of the casing being shaped as shown to conform to the pattern of the elements. The casing has a cover (not shown) secured thereto by means of lugs 7a. The substance being conveyed enters the casing above the elements and is discharged below the elements at one end of the casing through an outlet (not shown). Heating or cooling fluid passes through the. jacket space 5 in the casing by way of inlet/ outlet connections 7; and also passes through the helical conveyer elements. These each comprise a tube (14) surrounded by a hollow screwthread (15) (Fig. 6). The element rotates in end bearings 8. The screw-thread communicates at one end through a transverse port (24) with the tube interior space, and at its other end by means of another transverse port (23) with an annular inlet or outlet duct (22) passing through one of the bearings 8. A further duct (20) passes concentrically through the duct (22) into the tube interior. The heating or cooling fluid passes into and from the element by way of the ducts (20, 22). |
