A continuous flow reactor for producing pyrolysis coke, wherein a coal feeder (2) is fitted upstream of a downpipe reactor (1), the coal feed line (3) of which enters the reactor head (6) from above and receives a gas metering line (4). The reactor head (6) also receives a hot gas line (7) with which a burner is associated, and a gas/volatile substance/coke mixture line (10) branches off from the reactor outlet (9) and leads into a solids separator (11) fitted with a coke extractor (12) and a gas/volatile substances line (13). The coal feed line (3) has a cooling jacket (5) and the hot gas line (7) is laterally connected to the reactor head (6) at the level of the coal/feed gas outlet (16) so that the stream of hot gas from the hot gas inlet (15) is taken directly with the cooled coal/feed gas stream, whereby the coal grains are shock-coked to form spherical porous pyrolysis coke particles.
