PURPOSE:To obtain a bis(phenoxyalkoxy)xylene compound in a high yield and in a high quality by reacting a (substituted)phenoxyalcohol with xylylene dichloride in the presence of a base, while controlling the concentration of the base in an aqueous layer and dropping the xylylene dichloride. CONSTITUTION:A phenoxyalcohol (which may be substituted) of formula I (R1 is 1-10C divalent group which may contain an ether bond or sulfide bond; R2 is H, alkyl, halogen, nitro, CF3, methylthio; n is 0-5) [e.g. 2-(4- chlorophenoxy)ethanol] is reacted with a xylylene dichloride of formula II in the presence of a base to obtain a bis(phenoxyalkoxy)xylene. In the process, the concentration of the base in the aqueous layer is kept to 25-45wt.%, and the xylylene dichloride is dropped. The method is extremely profitable due to its reduced by-products and high yield. The produced compound is useful as an intermediate for industrial chemicals. |
