[Also in Division F2] A multi-pawl ratchet indexer comprises a pair of parallel plates 12; 14 carrying cross-studs 40 on which are pivotally mounted pawls 40 which are urged into engagement with teeth 36 on the periphery of a ratchet wheel 34 by springs 52 acting on pins 46 engaging the pawls 40. The pins 46 are mounted with substantial freedom in aligned bores 48 in the plates 12, 14. Extensions 16, 18 of plates 12, 14 receive a cross rod 20 on which an arm 22 is pivotally mounted, the arm 22 being connected to an eccentric the rotation of which causes oscillation of the plates 12, 14. The pawls 40 are arranged in two rows, each pair of side-by-side pawls having their driving edges slightly offset with respect to each other. Ratchet wheel 34 is keyed to a shaft 24 which is rotatably mounted in the plates 12, 14 and connected to an output shaft such as a feed roll shaft 38. In a modification, the loosely mounted pins 46 are replaced by circular collars 58 having a substantially larger diameter than that of fixed pins 56 on which they are mounted. The indexer is applied to feed mechanisms for stamping presses and other apparatus using a roll feed. |
