A polymeric substrate containing hydrogen atoms replaceable by metal atoms and which are attached to carbon atoms which are allylic, benzylic or contained within an aromatic ring, is provided with reactive organo metallic sites by forming a solution or suspension of said substrate in a hydrocarbon solvent and treating the substrate with an organo-alkali metallic compound (other than n-butyl lithium) complexed with an alkyl tertiary diamine to metalate the polymer to a point where at least 80% of the metal in the organo-alkali metalamine complex exchanges with the active hydrogen atoms in the polymer. Specified polymers are polydienes and polyvinyl aromatic compounds. Suitable diamines include those of formula wherein n is from 1 to 5 and R is a C 1 to C 3 - alkyl group, or of formula wherein n is from 1 to 5 and R1 is an alkylidene group, N,N1 - dimethylpiperazine, 1,4 - diazo- 2,2,2 - bicyclooctane, sparteine and bis - (dialkylamino) - cyclohexanes. Examples are given in which polystyrene is (a) treated with sec-butyl lithium and tetramethylethylene diamine prior to being grafted with butadiene or isoprene, or reacted with CO 2 or trimethylchlorosilane or (b) treated with amyl sodium and tetramethylethylene diamine or an amyl sodium-diazabicyclooctane complex. In other examples, polybutadiene is (a) treated with secbutyl lithium, or n-butyl sodium, and tetramethylethylene diamine prior to being grafted with styrene or (b) treated with sec-butyl lithium and N,N1 - dimethylpiperazine, N,N,N 1,N11,N11 - pentamethyldiethylene triamine, diazabicyclooctane or sparteine.
