PURPOSE:To obtain alpha-hydroxyisobutyric acid in high efficiency and concentration over a long period by the microbial hydrolysis of alpha-hydroxyisobutyronitrile in the presence of acetone in the reaction system. CONSTITUTION:For example, Rhodococcus rhodochrous ATCC 19140 strain is cultured and the obtained culture liquid or microbial cell is made to contact with alpha-hydroxyisobutyronitrile preferably at 2-30 deg.C and pH 6-8 in an aqueous medium in the presence of acetone (at a concentration of 0.5-50wt.%) to effect the hydrolysis of the nitrile and obtain the objective alpha-hydroxyisobutyric acid. |
