The invention relates to an apparatus and method for preparing metal rods for brazing. The manual cutting and positioning of rods for brazing introduces human errors into the process which the present invention aims to overcome. The invention provides an apparatus (10) for preparing metal rods (12, 12A) for brazing characterised by comprising: means (11, 11A, 13) for holding said metal rods (12, 12A) such that at least one end of each said rod (12 or 12A) can be cut at an angle substantially the same as an angle cut on the other said rod (12A or 12); means (16, 16A, 17, 18, 19, 110) for cutting at least one end of each said rod (12, 12A) so as to fashion like faces for joining together; means (11, 11A, 13) for axially aligning said cut faces; and means (13, 14) for positioning said cut faces along an axis whereby the metal rods (12, 12A) can be cut and positioned such that their cut faces may be aligned and held in a pre-selected position while a joint is formed by brazing.
