The clamping mechanism is housed for example in the bore of a machine tool spindle (2) with a bore diameter to accept the hollow spigot (1) of a cutting tool. Fastened to the actuating drawbar (23) is a mandrel (4) with an end collar (13) having a tapered shoulder (12). When the mandrel starts to move to the right into the clamping position the tapered shoulder causes the claws (5) to pivot radially outwards, so that the clamping surface (14) of the claw is fully aligned in the clamping position with the clamping surface (15) of the tool spigot before a clamping force is exerted. ADVANTAGE - Elimination of loaded point and sliding contact prevents wear on tool. Larger length tolerance can be permitted on tool spigot. Claw unit is easily assembled or removed.
