The roof panel (2) is joined to the edge frame (3) of the vehicle roof via a recessed groove (1), with weld seams at the bottom. A sealing compound (5) is applied to the bottom of the groove and a C-shaped metal grip strip (6) embedded in the compound. The free edges of the grip strip secure a flexible caulking strip (8) pressed into the groove. The grips strip has retaining edges which grip into shaped grooves in the caulking strip. The caulking strip is applied by a press-fit action and is simply prised out, eg to fit a roof-rack. The outer edge of the caulking strip seal against the inner edges of the groove.
