The mantle of a roller, especially a press roller in a papermaking machine, is thinner outside the working zone and at the end zones, to allow mantle bending. The clamping surfaces are radially within the couter mantle surfaces, angled against the roller axis. The thinner mantle section extends over only part of the mantle end, axially and the remaining section is cut out to give a number of tongues. The roller mantle has blind drillings or drillings passing through. The thicker mantle section has radial or spiral outer grooves. The radially inner layer of the roller and the thicker centre section has a second applied layer of a different hardness and consistency than the first mantle layer. The first layer has blind drillings for the mountings of the second layer without penetration. The roller mantle is held at a rotating core by ring or ring segment holders with a bellows between the mountings and the core. The inner layer has lontigudinal threads aligned axially, and the outer layer has radially arranged threads. Arrowed grooves on the outer surface of the mantle have a depth of 40-80 microns and a width of 0.3-0.8mm. The drillings in the roller mantle generally or wholly match peripheral grooves round the roller core. The mantle has an abrupt thickness reduction of at least 2mm. ADVANTAGE - The roller structure allows a rigid mantle of rubber or rubber-type plastics to be fitted rapidly and easily, with clamps which do not extend radially over the outer mantle surface.
