A strip of material (2) for bags is wound up and welded longitudinally, about a supply cylinder (1), in order to form a cylindrical material which advances at constant speed along the cylinder. Two perpendicular pairs of opposed pressure pieces (5, 6) alternately clamp, weld and cut the cylindrical material in order to form pyramidal bags filled with a substance supplied by the supply cylinder. Crank mechanisms (22, 24, 34; 23, 25, 35) communicate a circular or elliptical movement to the opposite pressure pieces, so that they clamp the material at the same time as they descend at the same speed as the material, the advance of the latter thus being continuous. Elastic pieces are normally retracted in the supply cylinder but they are displaced in downward projection and move apart laterally before the clamping and cutting operation in order to tension and fold the bag correctly.
