Recovering plated metal from steel scrap - by vaporising organic material prior to vaporising plated metal

Recovering plated metal from scrap steel sheet consists of preheating the scrap in a non-oxidising gas atmosphere in chamber (2); heating to 200-500 deg.C under reduced pressure in chamber (4) in order to vaporise the organic material adhering to or contained in the scrap; further heating under reduced pressure in intermediate chamber (6); heating to 500-950 deg.C under reduced pressure in chamber (8) to vaporise the plated metal coating from the scrap steel; and collecting the vaporised metal and cooling the scrap in a non-oxidising gas in cooling chamber (10). USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. recovering Zn or Al from galvanised steel sheet. Efficient method of recovering Zn or Al esp. when the scrap contains organic material.
