The invention relates to a heat generator for a motor vehicle with an engine, comprising a box (10) defining an enclosure (46) containing a heat transfer fluid, mechanical friction means with adjustable clamping (106, 114) located in the box and capable of being driven in rotation by a shaft (48) coupled to the engine of the vehicle and means for adjusting the clamping (120). An electromagnetic coil (130) is housed in the box in order to actuate a clutch (74, 80) interposed between the shaft (48) and the mechanical friction means, between an engaged position and a disengaged position. Thus a heat generator of compact structure is obtained which can be used at will, particularly in cold weather, for providing top-up heating to the passenger compartment (cockpit) of the vehicle and/or for reaching and sustaining an optimal operating temperature of the engine of the vehicle. <IMAGE>
