A high-torque damper comprises a casing 3 having a cylindrical chamber 1 containing viscous fluid, a rotatable member having a shaft 4 and vane 6 rotatable in said chamber, and a movable valve 7 carried with slack in the rotary direction on the vane 6 and slidable on the wall surface 20 of the chamber. The vane 6 has a channel 10, and the valve 7 has channels 8, 9 of differing cross-section which come into play according to the direction of rotation.
