[Also in Division B8] To accelerate solidification of the top of a rimming steel ingot and cause the rimming to stop, lengths of steel scrap, e.g. sheared edges of pickled, hot-rolled sheet of an analysis similar to that of the ingot, are randomly deposited on the molten metal in the mould so that a large-meshed grid of scrap is formed on the molten end. The solidified crust so formed may be sprayed with cooling water. A simple box 2 is used to convey and deposit the steel scrap. It has suspension eyes 9 and two hinged bottom flaps 10, 11, one held releasably in place by a lever 15 and having n flange 14 to contact the other. |
