The packaging line has the containers (1) moving along a belt feed under the process positions. A measured amount of liquid nitrogen is dropped into each container from a reservoir (3) prior to loading with the product (5). The liquid nitrogen vapourises rapidly to displace the oxygen allowing the pack to be sealed. The sealing action takes place inside a tunnel (7) which is flushed with nitrogen gas, using spaced nozzles (8).
