[Also in Division F4] Apparatus for contacting a liquid with another fluid comprises a plurality of vertical members arranged in a housing in a parallel horizontally spaced relationship and to the upper ends of which liquid is supplied to form flowing films of liquid bridging the gaps between adjacent members, the other fluid being passed upwardly or downwardly through interspaces bounded by at least two bridging films. As shown in Fig. 1 the members are in the form of plates 2 with ribs 4 and each interspace is bounded by two liquid films 6 and two portions 2' of the plates. Alternatively the ribs may be provided on the surfaces of concentric cylinders or the plates may be corrugated the films being established between opposed crests of the corrugations of adjacent plates. As shown in Fig. 4 the members have the form of rods with four ribs and the interspaces are bounded by four liquid films. Other forms of member include rods of circular, square or cruciform cross-section. In the arrangement of Fig. 11 conduits 174 are arranged between the members 172 a heat-exchange fluid being passed through the conduits. Liquid is supplied to the members from a suitable header. The other fluid may be a gas or another liquid not miscible with the liquid forming the films.
