In order rapidly to tension and to release the tension in a belt, the device includes: a carriage 2 sliding on a fixed support 3 and carrying the axle 1 of a pulley or the like over which the belt passes; an operating member 15 carried by the fixed support 3; and a coupling mechanism 14 coupled to the operating member 15 and to the sliding carriage 2 and set out to occupy, on either side of a neutral point position B-B corresponding to an excess tension in the belt, a first position in which the belt is tensioned, and a second position in which the tension in the belt is released. <IMAGE>
