Disk storage apparatus comprises driving means (78) responsive to a drive signal for moving a head radially across any storage disk compatible with the apparatus. The velocity of the head moving across the disk is detected by velocity detecting means (74). A target velocity of the head is indicated by a velocity profile stored in a memory (86). Control means (200) measures the time required for moving the head by a predetermined distance at a predetermined velocity. A drive signal generator (90) generates the drive signal as function of the difference between the target velocity and the output from the velocity detecting means and the difference between the measured time and a predetermined value. This advantageously permits the velocity of the head during a seek operation to be controlled independently of scatter in circuit constants or variations in disk structure, and allows successful transition between seek operation and track following operations.
