PURPOSE:To reduce the degree of expansion development of an air bag and to reduce an impact relaxing action on a passenger by releasing a lock means from a lock state when a vehicle is collided with an obstacle at car speed lower than a given value and causing the air bag to be movable in a front direction by means of a reaction force during expansion development of the air bag. CONSTITUTION:When a vehicle is collided with an obstacle during running at a specified speed, for example, 30km/h or less and the collision is detected by a collision detecting sensor 43 to output an operation signal, an actuating rod 27a of an actuator 27 composing an electric lock means is pulled off through a lock hole 39a of a striker 39. The proper number of inflators is selected from a plurality of inflators 9 by means of an inflator control unit to start the inflators. By means of a reaction force during expansion development of an air bag 11, an air bag unit 1 is slid obliquely downward along a side wall 21b of a housing 21 on the whole. This constitution comparatively reduces the degree of expansion, in the direction of a car room N, of the air bag 11 and reduces the degree of relaxation of an impact on a passenger during collision of a passenger with the air bag 11. |
