A perfusion-type intravascular catheter (10) having an outer sheath (12) disposed about the catheter body (15) with a sealing element on the distal end of the sheath (12) to seal off the distal end thereof at a location distal to perfusion ports (21) provided in the wall (23) of the catheter body (15) proximal to an expandable working member (25) such as an inflatable balloon (17) whereby blood can be directed through the proximal perfusion ports (21) into an inner lumen (18) extending through the working member (25) and out of perfusion ports (22) provided in the walls of the catheter distal to the expandable working member (25) to ensure that ischemic conditions do not occur distal to the catheter when the working member (25) is expanded to perform a vascular procedure therein. <IMAGE>
