Multilayer friction element made up of a structural layer (1) made of carbon-carbon composite material obtained from a fibrous substrate having a so-called "coarse" texture which has a median pore diameter exceeding 100 mu m and which can consist of segments of carbon-fibre rovings, at least one surface of this layer being coated with a friction layer (2) made of carbon-carbon composite material obtained from a fibrous substrate having a so-called "fine" texture which has a median pore diameter less than 50 mu m and which consists of randomly distributed carbon-fibre segments. Method of manufacturing a multilayer friction element comprising the manufacture of a fibrous substrate with the aid of an automatic device for distributing segments of rovings and/or fibres.
