A continuous web of material (10), such as paper, is folded transversely and cut parallel to the fold lines by the folding machine. The paper web is cu t by a device (8) consisting of a blade cylinder (2) and a collector cylinder (3). The paper web then passes to a folding cylinder (4) and a smoothing cylinder (5). The folding cylinder has several coaxial rotors (21,22) which rotate at the same speed but in opposite directions. The rotors are driven by coaxially mounted gears, which are interconnected through a gear train.
