The appts. to form plug couplings for fused silica gas chromatography capillaries, where the glass tube coupling is tapered in the centre to take the capillary ends at each side and the outer mantle covers the whole angled centre section, is an assembly (7) with a fixed holder (12), a fixed heater and a movable holder (13) mounted in a longitudinal fluting (9) in the base. The position of the movable holder is shifted (19) between two limit stops fitted in the fluting. Release clamps to hold the glass tubes are mounted to the fixed (12) and movable (13) holders. The release clamps are pref. simply mechanical, pneumatic or electromagnetic units, as they are for the mechanism to shift the movable holder (13). The header (22) is an electrical heater or a gas pressure burner. ADVANTAGE - The appts. gives a simple mechanism to form plug couplings for glass tubes with an outer mantle of a material which is malleable at high temps..
