An installation for producing seamless tubes includes a pre-form press (1) where a heated metal block (3) is provided with a blind axial hole (7). The pre-formed block is then removed from the press by a handling mechanism (4) in order to blow nitrogen gas into the hole for the removal of surface scale. After forming the block (3') in a rolling frame (12), the process of nitrogen injection is repeated by a second handling mechanism (13), before the tube is transferred to its final rolling station (18).
