A process for manufacture of relatively pure parahydroxy methyl-benzoic acid comprises crystallizing crude sodium para-hydroxymethylbenzoate from hot, concentrated aqueous solution thereof recovering the crystallized sodium salt after removing any sparingly soluble impurities and obtaining the free acid therefrom. The crude sodium salt may be prepared from crude free acid or by saponification of a para - halogeno - methyl - benzoic acid with a sodium compound.
