Control apparatus for the drive motor (M) of a food processing apparatus comprises a microcomputer (MICOM) arranged to enable a drive circuit (2) to apply ac electrical power to the motor (M) by way of a triac (T1). The motor (M) is arranged to rotate the kneading blade of the food processor and also to rotate a disc. The teeth of the disc are arranged to pass between light emitting diodes (LED2) and a photo receiver (PTR) of a sensing device (PC2). The signals generated by the sensing device are fed to the control means (1) which is arranged to actuate an alarm (4) and switch off the supply of power to the motor (M) by way of the drive circuit (2) if the motor speed is too high indicating absence of the blade, or too low indicating non-rotation of the motor.
