Whooping cough vaccine prodn. - using itaconic acid to inactivate microorganisms

Prodn. of whooping cough vaccines is effected by culturing Bordetella pertussis, inactivating the microorganisms by incubation with 3.75-13 mg/ml of itaconic acid at pH 3.7-4.2 for 1-4 hr., sedimenting the microbial mass, decanting the supernatant, and diluting the sediment with isotonic NaCl soln. ADVANTAGE - The vaccines have higher protective activity than vaccines inactivated with HCHO or merthiolate, and lower toxicity (lymphocytosis-stimulating activity) than vaccines prepd. by sedimentation with HCl.
