The deriv. has formula (SP-C) R'mR''n. SP-C is an amino acid sequence of synthetic or recombinant human SP-C protein; R' is 2-4C acyl; R'' is 8-24C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy-carbonyl or benzyloxy carbonyl; n and m are 0-5 with n+m greater than zero. The deriv. is made by reaction of SP-C with (a) an acyl deriv., R'Y or alkyl deriv. R''Z in which Y and Z are usual easily-removed gps. and where required, removal of mercapto gps. from R' and R'' or their acylation or alkylation with another deriv. R'Y or R''Z; or (b) a reagent with protective gps. which selectively eliminates the mercapto-protecting gp. or if required acylation or alkylation of free mercapto gps. and removal of amino-protecting gps. The derivs. have suprising stability and are suitable for treatment of infant or adult respiratory distress syndrome.
