Following each operational direction of the selector switch, the switching contacts of a coordinate switch are acted on, which accordingly gives gear chaning signals to the gearbox control. The selector lever relative to the driver is operated towards him, away from him and upwards and downwards. The operating direction displayed from the driver is assigned the travel step 'D' for the automatic drive, and the operating directions upwards and downwards are assigned for the changing up and down of the gears in manual operation in steps. The reverse gear is engaged by pulling the selector lever towards the driver. A parking lock is provided to work with the hand-brake if fitted or, if not, with a separate operating knob.
