The machine cooks a measure of cereral under pressure in a mould compressing a punch and cavity die which are relatively displaceable. Without opening the mould, the vol. between punch and die is suddenly increased by relative axial movement and this produces expansion of the cereal. The mould is subsequently opened to allow the ckae to be removed. The mould is constructed with a fixed punch located coaxially above a vertically movable cavity die. Pref. the die is mounted on top of the rod of a piston which is movable in a cylinder by hydraulic oil pumped into the cylinder below the piston. This compresses air above the cylinder so that when the oil pump is stopped and oil allowed to flow out of the cylinder, the air expands and drives the piston down. This produces the sudden vol. increase in the mould which expands the cereal. Oil escapes from the cylinder through radial holes in the piston rod below the piston. As soon as the holes become obscured by the sliding bearing of the piston rod, this ends the sudden vol. increase of the mould and cereal expansion is finished. |
