The invention relates to the measurement of displacements. An optical sensor comprises a collimated source 2 fixed to a moving object and a series of optical detectors L1, L2...Ln aligned on a fixed body, in the direction of the movement, directly facing the source; photodiodes convert the optical signals picked up into electric signals; a computer takes the sum of the electric signals and a sum of the products of these signals multiplied by a constant coefficient, then it takes the ratio of these sums and compares the ratio with a stored scale of ratios which gives the position of the moving object. Main application: measurement of displacements. <IMAGE>
