Arrangement of steps for reducing the space taken up by a stairway. This stairway permits access to an upper level or a lower level with steps of the same height and of the same depth as in a conventional straight stairway, while at the same time reducing by half the space taken up by the stairway. Its originality lies in the fact that its steps are designed for the exclusive use of the left or the right foot; the first ones having their leading edges at the height of the middle of the second ones, and vice versa, the result of this being that each step has an effective height equivalent to twice the height of a normal step, but the user is not inconvenienced by this since, on a normal stairway, each of his feet would have climbed the steps two by two anyway. The arrangement according to the invention is intended in particular for the provision of stairways in premises which were not conceived for this purpose, and in particular if the said premises are cramped. This type of stairway could be manufactured in a standard fashion or to given measurements. <IMAGE>
