The invention relates to a method for separation of the para isomer of a dialkyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbon from a mixture with at least one other isomer of this hydrocarbon, in which method the mixture is brought into contact with a crystalline aluminium silicate adsorbent which contains barium and potassion ions in exchangeable cation seats in amounts corresponding to a BaO/K2O molar ratio of 0.6:1-1.2:1 under adsorption conditions chosen in such a way that the para isomer is adsorbed, after which the adsorbent which contains the para isomer is brought into contact with a desorbing material chosen from monofluoro- or difluoro-substituted aromatic hydrocarbons or mixtures thereof under desorption conditions chosen in such a way that said para isomer is recovered. <IMAGE>
