A braking system for motor vehicles with anti-skid control has a pressure limiter (2) provided in the rear axle brake circuit and in order to make maximum use of the total brake force in the event of failure of the ASS function without obtaining an unstable vehicle condition, the pressure limiter (2) only acts in the event of failure of the ASS function to which end the pressure limiter (2) has the form of a two-port, two-position solenoid valve whose coil (10) is energised by the ASS control device (11) so as to retain the valve open during ASS action. The valve comprises a ball (7) integral with an armature stem (8), the ball being held open by a spring biassed piston (3, 4, 6) until a certain pressure is reached which displaces the piston. The armature (8) is held by the coil (10) during ASS control. A modification has two inputs to the valve which balance each other to produce a reduced pressure output. <IMAGE> |
