A fuel cell system having a fuel cell for generating power by using fuel; a first auxiliary power source; a protection circuit connected to the first auxiliary power source and detecting an abnormality of the first auxiliary power source; an auxiliary machine for supplying the fuel to the fuel cell; a control circuit for controlling operation of the fuel cell and the auxiliary machine; a first power converter for driving the control circuit by power from the first auxiliary power source; and a first combining section for combining first power from the fuel cell and second power from the first auxiliary power source to supply the result to a load. In the fuel cell system, the control circuit can be operated by the first power converter even if the protection circuit is activated by an overcurrent etc. to cutoff power from the first auxiliary power source to the first combining section, thereby appropriate processing can be performed.
