A process for sweetening a sour hydrocabon fraction comprises (i) reacting, in a non-oxidizing atmos. at reaction conditions, (a) a mercaptan contained in the fraction with (b) an unsatd. hydrocarbon also contained in the fraction, at a molar concn. at least equal to that of the mercaptans present, in the presence as acid catalyst of acidic inorganic oxide, polymeric sulphonic acid resin, intercalate cpd., solid acid catalyst, or B or Al halide dispersed on Al2O3, so as to convert mercaptans to thioethers, and (ii) recovering a sweetened prod.. The unsatd. hydrocarbon may be present as an original component of the hydrocarbon fraction or may be added to it before contacting with the catalyst.
