For under stoichiometric combustion in a first furnace stage 2 a mixer 6 supplies a mix of air from duct 5 and low or non-oxygen containing reducing gas recycled from the first stage 2 by a flue duct 8 which preferably includes a cooler 9. The second furnace stage 12 is supplied with air by duct 14 and the mixed gas by duct 22, includes a cooler 15 and exhausts through a further cooler 16 into a flue 19 supplying the mixer 8 and a flue 18.
